Firefighters respond to gas leak in Hosmer
Elk Valley firefighters responded to a gas leak in Hosmer Wednesday afternoon after a resident struck a gas line while using an excavator.
Elk Valley and South Country Rural Fire and Rescue Service Deputy Chief Ben Goertzen said firefighters were called to Stephenson Road after the line was hit.
“A resident on Stephenson Road struck a gas line while using an excavator,” Goertzen said. “We are grateful to the residents of Hosmer for their patience as we kept the area safe.”
Three members from the Hosmer Fire Department responded, along with five FortisBC units. No injuries were reported.
Stephenson Road was closed for about two hours while FortisBC repaired the leak.
The incident prompted another reminder for residents, contractors and property owners to contact BC 1 Call before digging or disturbing the ground. The service helps identify where gas lines and other underground utilities are located before work begins.
FortisBC recommends submitting a locate request at least three business days before digging. BC 1 Call can be reached online or by phone at 1-800-474-6886.
