Local Journalism Initiative

Food and family activities ran from noon to 2 p.m., with evening events at the Leisure Centre

Sparwood residents were invited to spend Feb. 16 outdoors at Centennial Plaza for Winterfest, with an afternoon of community games and snacks followed by an evening glow skate and fireworks.

The District of Sparwood promoted the event as a mix of food, games and family-friendly fun at the plaza before shifting later in the day to a free glow skate and a fireworks show after dusk. There were burgers and cupcakes available, with fires and heaters spread throughout the plaza for residents to gather around for warmth.

The Family Day festival listing said the daytime portion ran from noon to 2 p.m., with activities including axe throwing, cornhole, spikeball and Chippo, along with crafts and snow painting. The same listing said the skating loop, outdoor rink and toboggan hill were also expected to be open, weather permitting.

Food and treats were part of the draw, with the Sparwood Lions Club listed as providing cocoa and popcorn, Komatsu bringing cupcakes, and Sparwood Secondary School hosting a grad fundraiser barbecue.

The evening portion included a free glow skate at the Leisure Centre starting at 4:30 p.m., with organizers encouraging skaters to wear white or neon colours, followed by fireworks shortly after dusk.
