Crowsnest Pass council has given first reading to a bylaw that would close and relocate part of a Bellevue lane to accommodate future multi-family housing.
Bylaw 1273, 2026 concerns a lane adjoining Lots 17 to 19, Block 1, Plan 071 5951 near the Bellevue fire hall.
The proposed closure would allow the lane area to be consolidated with the three lots for future subdivision and development.
Chief Administrative Officer Patrick Thomas said the route would be shifted to the north and would continue to connect with the rear lane serving neighbouring homes.
“We’re not removing the laneway, just relocating it,” Thomas said.
Maps in the Oct. 20 council package show the portion proposed for closure and the replacement route that would be dedicated and constructed farther north.
First reading begins the public process. It does not close the lane, approve a subdivision or authorize construction of the housing project.
Council was told the bylaw will return for a public hearing. After the hearing, the proposal must be forwarded to Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors for approval before council can consider second and third readings.
If the road closure receives final approval, the closed portion can be titled and consolidated with the adjoining land.
Council gave first reading without recorded opposition. A public-hearing date was not announced at the meeting.
