Albertans can apply for $100 energy rebate
Applications are now open for Alberta’s new $100 Energy Rebate, a one-time payment the province says is intended to help residents with the rising cost of everyday essentials, including fuel.
The rebate is expected to have broad local reach in Crowsnest Pass, where many households rely on regular driving for work, school, medical appointments, groceries and services. The province says nearly 3.4 million Albertans are expected to be eligible.
Eligible residents can apply online through the provincial rebate portal until Sept. 30. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older as of July 1, live in Alberta, have filed a 2025 tax return and have a household income of $225,000 or less.
For the rebate, the province defines a household as either a single person or two people who are married or in a common-law relationship. Adults living at the same address who are not married or common-law, including roommates, adult children and other adult family members, are considered separate households and must apply separately.
A two-adult household could receive $200 if both adults qualify, while homes with additional eligible adults may receive $100 for each person who applies and is approved.
The province says residents receiving the Alberta Seniors Benefit, Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped, Alberta Disability Assistance Program or Income Support as of July 1 will be automatically enrolled and do not need to apply. New clients enrolled in those programs after July 1 will need to apply through the portal.
The Alberta Energy Rebate replaces the Fuel Tax Relief Program that would have taken effect July 1. The province says the direct payment is meant to provide more flexibility than fuel tax relief by allowing Albertans to use the money for groceries, utilities, rent, fuel or other household needs.
“This rebate builds on our existing affordability measures, delivering broader, flexible support to ensure Alberta remains the most affordable place to live, work and raise a family,” said Affordability and Utilities Minister RJ Sigurdson in a provincial release.
To apply, residents need a verified Alberta.ca account. Applicants must confirm their information, register through the online portal and set up a payment method. The province says payments will be delivered by Interac e-transfer within 14 days after an application is submitted and approved.
Applicants will be asked to provide their Social Insurance Number. Those with a spouse or common-law partner will also need to provide that person’s Social Insurance Number, date of birth and legal name as reported on their 2025 tax return.
The province says the rebate is non-taxable and will not affect eligibility for provincial or federal benefits.
