John Hague has been named the Regional District of East Kootenay Electoral Area G 2026 Volunteer of the Year.
Hague was recognized June 9 during the Area G Information Meeting in Edgewater.
RDEK Electoral Area G Director Roberta Schnider said Hague has made a lasting impact in the Columbia Valley through his leadership, volunteer work and commitment to sport and community well-being.
“John has made a lasting impact in the Columbia Valley by sharing his time, his leadership and his passion for sport and community well-being,” said Schnider. “Over the years, he has helped create opportunities for people of all ages to stay active, connected and engaged.”
Hague has been involved with the Columbia Valley Minor Hockey Association as head referee, helping support young athletes and the continued growth of the sport. According to the RDEK, his role helped give players a positive environment to learn the game, build skills and take part in team sport.
He has also been active in badminton and tennis in the valley and helped introduce pickleball to the Columbia Valley. His work included finding court space, teaching new players and helping build interest in the sport.
The RDEK said pickleball has since become a well-established activity in the valley, particularly among middle-aged and older adults who value the sport for its accessibility, social connection and health benefits.
Hague’s volunteer work has also extended beyond sport. He has volunteered with Groundswell Community Greenhouse and Gardens, where he has shared his knowledge of permaculture gardening, mentored aspiring gardeners and helped others learn about growing food at home.
“John’s efforts have enriched lives, strengthened connections and created opportunities that will continue to benefit people for years to come,” said Schnider.
The RDEK’s Volunteer of the Year recognition honours residents who contribute their time and effort to improving their communities.
