Women of Steel donates 103 backpacks

14th annual campaign supports students in Pass and Elk Valley

At the end of August, the Women of Steel Local 9346 Committee once again geared up for their annual donation of backpacks and supplies to Crowsnest Pass and area schools. Sarah Thompson, Women of Steel Co-Chair, said that this initiative by the United Steel Workers Local 9346 has become a “well-oiled machine.”

This marks the 14th year the Women of Steel Committee out of Sparwood has spearheaded the Back to School Backpacks Campaign. This year, the group provided 103 backpacks full of the needed school supplies to kids in the Crowsnest Pass, Fernie, Sparwood and Elkford. The committee also supported students through donations to the Sparwood Food Bank, and the Fernie Women’s Resource Centre.

One donation photo at Horace Allen School showed the full set of packs going to Crowsnest Pass kids, with Sarah Thompson, Women of Steel Co-Chair, Marnie Davidson, HAS Principal, Lyndsay Robson, Women of Steel Committee Member, and Jen Riley, Women of Steel Co-Chair.
