The second annual beautification project for the Crowsnest Hospital is underway, with planting day scheduled for June 1.

This year, the area to be beautified with flowers and plants will be the inner courtyard of the hospital just off of the continuing care unit. From now until planting day, volunteers will be attending greenhouses and selecting the types of flowers they would like to see planted.

Led by Alberta Health Services, the project aims to make the hospital and health centres more inviting, friendly and enjoyable for patients, families and staff members.

“It’s an opportunity for the health centre to connect with community groups and businesses to beautify the outdoor space of the hospital. It really creates a great environment for our patients, visitors to the hospital, family members and our hardworking staff as a place to go and reconnect with nature and enjoy being outside,” says Chris Fujita, manager with volunteer services with the south zone of Alberta Health Services.

Alberta Health Services links with local community groups, organizations and volunteers to take part in a planting day. It is a partnership and collaborative effort with the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation, which provided funding for the project.

“It’s a real opportunity to connect with the community as a partner to help coordinate and make their local hospital as beautiful as it can be,” says Fujita.

Fujita says they are currently looking for volunteers to help with both the planting day on June 1, and those willing to make a commitment and look after the area throughout the growing season.

“On a weekly basis, they would do general cleanup of that inner courtyard, so things like raking or getting rid of debris or leaves, watering plants and making sure that the courtyard looks as great as it can,” she says.

To register as a volunteer, either for planting day or as a seasonal caretaker contact Fujita at Chris.Fujita@ahs.ca or at 403-388-6003.
