Fire broke out at the BCMI hotel in Blairmore on Saturday, November 5th, destroying the restaurant and lounge and causing extensive smoke damage to several of the hotel’s guest rooms.
The fire erupted at approximately 8 p.m., and the Blairmore Fire Department was soon on scene to battle the blaze, calling in the
Coleman fire crew for back up and Search and Rescue to perform crowd control.
Emergency Medical
Services and Crowsnest Pass RCMP were also on scene for assistance.
Fire crews worked vigilantly through the night to quell the flames, finally succeeding at around 6 a.m. on Sunday morning.
The hotel’s restaurant (Rusty’s Canadian Grille) the lounge (The Pass Sports Bar) and lobby were all destroyed in the fire, while hotel rooms were saved from the flames.
Provincial fire investigators were called in on Sunday to determine the cause.
Kenneth Brands, Safety Codes Officer for All Fire
Investigations Inc., was brought on as a consultant on the fire in order to determine cause and origin.

Brands, who worked as a volunteer fire fighter for many years, said he has responded to a great number of fires and is impressed with how the fire departments handled the situation.
“That was a big save by the fire department,” he said.
Brands said the fire could have easily engulfed the entire building and spread to neighbouring ones if it were not for the hard work of the fire fighters.
“It was only the decisions and tactics of the fire commander and the fire fighters that limited the damage to that building,” said Brands.
No staff or guests were in the building when the fire broke out.
One fire fighter received minor injuries while battling the blaze and was taken to hospital in Blairmore where he was treated and released.
The cause and origin of the fire had not yet been released by the time of publication but investigators say the fire is not suspicious.
